The health care bill has been signed into law, but what does it mean for you? The purpose of the law is to provide accessible health care coverage for an estimated 32 million Americans who are currently uninsured, and it will help people who already have health insurance retain their coverage. The Louisiana Department of Insurance has constructed this page to better help you understand the changes and updates that come along with this new legislation. Some of the law's provisions are currently in effect, while others will be phased in through 2020. Lawmakers and federal and state regulators are working to adopt the laws and rules necessary to implement health care reform.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Public Law. No. 111-148) is a federal statute that was signed into law by President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010. The Act, along with the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 (signed into law on March 30, 2010), are recently passed laws that implement wide sweeping changes to the delivery of health care, to health insurance, and to public wellness.
